What does watersports insurance cover?
Our water sports travel insurance is designed for surfers, divers, paddlers, open water swimmers and other participants heading abroad for experiences on, in or beneath the water.
A full water sports travel policy combines essential travel protection with specialist cover for activities on, in and around the water, such as sailing, rafting and scuba diving.
This can include cover for emergency medical treatment and repatriation if you’re injured abroad, as well as protection if unforeseen circumstances mean you need to cancel or cut short your trip. Personal accident and personal liability cover can also be included, helping protect you if you’re injured or accidentally cause injury or damage to someone else.
Depending on the level of cover you choose, you can also protect your water sports equipment, pre-paid activity fees and search and rescue costs, giving you broader protection both on and off the water.
If you already have travel insurance but your chosen water sport is excluded, a water sports bolt-on can add the specialist activity cover you need. It can even be added after your trip has started.
Our policies provide three different types of cover: Sports travel insurance, Sports accident, and Activity Top-Up. Please ensure you select the most suitable cover for your activity, when you get a quote and always review your policy documents.

How much does water sports insurance cost?
The price of your water sports travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you have planned and the cover you choose.
Your Bronze, Silver or Gold plan sets the benefit limits included in your policy, while your age, destination and the length of your trip will also contribute to the overall premium.
The water sports you want to take part in are an important factor too. Different activities carry different levels of risk, so your price can vary depending on whether you’re surfing, kayaking, rafting, sailing, scuba diving or combining several activities during the same holiday.
If you’re travelling with your own boards, dive kit or other specialist water sports equipment, choosing additional equipment protection can also increase the cost.

Yes, our Water Sports Insurance can generally be taken out even if you have a medical condition. We can almost always offer cover at no extra cost, but occasionally our underwriters may apply special terms if you subsequently needed to make a claim relating to your condition.
Not always – most standard travel insurance policies provide only limited coverage for water sports activities, so you’ll need additional or specialist coverage for many water activities.
Standard travel insurance policies do not always cover hazardous sports. Our Sports Travel Insurance is specifically designed to cover over 500 high risk activities such as bungee jumping, skateboarding, ski-acrobatics and many more.
Our equipment cover protects your gear against theft, loss, and damage, subject to policy limits and security requirements. This includes:
- Personal water sports equipment up to £5,600
- Hired equipment (if specified)
- Coverage for theft, loss, and damage
- Specific storage and security requirements apply.
Scuba diving coverage requires specific certifications and adherence to safety protocols. Coverage includes:
- Requires valid certification.
- Has depth limits (typically 40 meters)
- Must be with licensed operators.
- Requires proper safety equipment.
- May have additional premium costs.
Our policies will cover anyone up to the age of 74 at the time of purchase. An applicant aged 75 or over cannot be covered.
