What does Kilimanjaro trekking insurance cover?

Our Kilimanjaro travel insurance is designed for adventurers planning a trek in Tanzania, from the mountain’s lower slopes to the challenge of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.

It combines high-altitude trekking protection with essential travel support, allowing you to choose enhanced cover for climbing Kilimanjaro where standard policies may exclude the activity.

Specialist Kilimanjaro cover can include search and rescue, trekking equipment, pre-paid activity or expedition fees and protection for your selected altitude level.

Alongside protection for the trek, the full travel policy can cover emergency medical treatment and repatriation, trip cancellation and curtailment, baggage, personal accident and other unexpected travel costs.

If you already have travel insurance but need enhanced cover for trekking Kilimanjaro, our Travel Bolt-on can add specialist activity protection for the days of your climb, where your existing policy excludes the trek or its altitude.

Our policies provide three different types of cover: Sports travel insurance, Sports accident, and Activity Top-Up. Please ensure you select the most suitable cover for your activity, when you get a quote and always review your policy documents.

Sports equipment is excluded under our bolt‑on cover.

How much does insurance for climbing Kilimanjaro cost?

The cost of your Kilimanjaro trekking insurance reflects your destination and the altitude you plan to reach. Trekking in Tanzania can require enhanced cover, while Kilimanjaro’s summit sits just below 6,000m, so you’ll need to select an appropriate altitude option, with cover available up to 7,000m.

Your age, trip duration and chosen cover level also influence the premium. The price can vary according to the protection you select for medical expenses, cancellation and search and rescue, along with any additional cover for trekking gear and specialist equipment.

Why do I need insurance for climbing Kilimanjaro?

Medical and rescue costs can escalate

Altitude illness or injury can lead to expensive treatment or mountain rescue.

High-altitude trekking needs specialist cover

Kilimanjaro summit (Uhuru Peak) sits at 5,895m, a level often excluded from other policies.

Trekking trip cancellation can be costly

Advance bookings for flights, permits, guides and accommodation can be protected.

Hear from our experts

“Climbing Kilimanjaro takes you from Tanzania’s lower mountain slopes to a summit just below 6,000m, where altitude sickness, cold conditions or an unexpected injury can make a demanding trek more challenging.

Careful preparation is essential. Choose a route and pace suited to your fitness and experience, allow time to acclimatise, pack suitable clothing and equipment, and follow your guide’s advice throughout the ascent.

Our Kilimanjaro trekking insurance can help cover emergency medical expenses, repatriation, search and rescue costs, cancellations, delays and other unexpected expenses if your climb does not go to plan. Make sure your selected cover includes trekking in Tanzania and the maximum altitude you intend to reach.”

FAQs

Yes. Your cover must include the maximum altitude you plan to reach. Kilimanjaro’s summit is 5,895m, so select our trekking cover option of up to 7,000m and ensure your policy includes trekking in Tanzania.

Yes. You must declare pre-existing medical conditions when applying for cover. We consider all conditions, although any specific terms will depend on your medical assessment.

Helicopter evacuation can be covered under the search and rescue section, subject to the policy’s terms and rescue arrangements. Our full travel policy provides search and rescue cover of up to £15,000 on Bronze, £25,000 on Silver and £50,000 on Gold. Check your policy documents for the applicable conditions and excess.

Some standard policies exclude high-altitude or multi-day trekking, or apply specific restrictions to trekking in Tanzania. Check that your policy covers your destination, planned activity and summit altitude. If your existing travel insurance excludes the trek, our Travel Bolt-on can provide specialist activity cover for your trekking days.

Emergency medical treatment for Acute Mountain Sickness can be covered if you become unwell while trekking overseas, provided your policy includes the activity, destination and altitude reached. Cover is subject to the policy’s medical terms and exclusions.

Your full travel policy can include protection for travel delay, abandonment and missed departure, with limits varying by cover level. Whether you can claim depends on the cause and length of the disruption and the costs involved. Missing the start of your trek does not automatically mean all lost trekking fees are covered, so check the relevant policy sections.

Our full travel policy can cover trekking equipment up to £200 on Bronze, £400 on Silver or £600 on Gold, with an upgrade available on Gold. Cover is subject to the equipment terms and applicable excess. Sports equipment is excluded from our Travel Bolt-on.
