What does kayaking insurance cover?
Our kayaking travel insurance is designed for paddlers heading abroad for recreational kayaking, guided excursions, white water, sea kayaking and multi-day trips.
We provide protection for both travel risks and kayaking-specific risks, so you’re covered for the full extent of your trip.
You can choose the activity level that matches the water you plan to paddle, including routes up to Grade 5.
Kayaking-specific cover can include emergency medical treatment and repatriation following an accident on the water, search and rescue costs, protection for lost, stolen or damaged kayaking equipment, and cover for pre-paid activity fees.
Travel cover can protect against problems affecting the wider trip, including cancellation and curtailment, delays, missed departures, baggage, personal accident, personal liability and more.
If you need extra kayaking protection to add to your existing policy, our kayaking bolt-on can add cover for the days you are paddling, even after your trip has started.
Our policies provide three different types of cover: Sports travel insurance, Sports accident, and Activity Top-Up. Please ensure you select the most suitable cover for your activity, when you get a quote and always review your policy documents.
Sports equipment is excluded under our bolt‑on cover.
Only a summary of the policy’s coverage is presented on this page. Please refer to policy documents for full details of what is and what is not covered, when you get a quote.
How much does kayaking insurance cost?
Your kayaking insurance premium is calculated based on several key factors, including your age, your destination (such as Europe or worldwide), the duration of your trip, and the type of kayaking you plan to do (for example, recreational paddling, whitewater kayaking, or competitive events).
The level of kayaking cover you select also plays a role, such as a higher grade of water (up to grade 5) as well as higher sports equipment protection and increased cancellation limits affecting the overall cost.

Why do you need kayaking travel insurance?
Accidents on the water can be costly
A capsize or impact injury could leave you needing medical treatment or rescue from a remote location.
Kayaking equipment can be expensive to replace
Cover can protect your specialist kayaking kit if they are stolen or damaged during your trip.
Travel disruption can derail your plans
Cancellations, delays or severe weather could affect transport, accommodation and pre-booked paddling activities.
Our experts explain why…
“Kayaking is an exciting way to explore rivers, coastlines and remote landscapes, but changing weather, strong currents and challenging water conditions can quickly increase the risks.
Good preparation is essential. Check local conditions, use suitable safety equipment and choose routes that match your experience, particularly when sea kayaking or tackling white water.
Our kayaking insurance can help cover emergency medical treatment, search and rescue costs, cancellations, delays and other unexpected expenses if your paddling trip does not go to plan.
With more than 30 years’ experience supporting active travellers, we can help you take to the water with specialist protection in place.”

FAQs
Yes, our Kayaking Insurance can generally be taken out even if you have a medical condition. We can almost always offer cover at no extra cost, but occasionally our underwriters may apply special terms if you subsequently needed to make a claim relating to your condition.
Standard travel insurance policies do not always cover adventure sports. Our Sports Travel Insurance is specifically designed to cover over 500 high risk activities such as bungee jumping, skateboarding, ski-acrobatics and many more.
The grading system is a standardized scale that relates to the International Scale of River Difficulty. It reflects the technical difficulty and skill level required associated with the section of river/sea. We categorise our Kayaking Insurance into 3 separate policies: up to grade 3/sea, grade 4 & 5, and above grade 5.
Up to grade 3/sea
Clear passages, numerous but manageable waves, some rocks. Most white water kayaking in UK (Tay in Scotland, Dee in Wales, Tyne in North England)
Grade 4 & 5:
“Difficult and very difficult”. Long, sometimes violent rapids, high waves, dangerous rocks, steep gradient, big drops – close study essential, demands expert experience and quality equipment
Above grade 5:
“Exceedingly difficult”. Extremely violent rapids following each other almost without interruption, riverbed mostly obstructed, very steep gradient – close study often difficult/impossible, demands specialist skill.
Our policies will cover anyone up to the age of 74 at the time of purchase. An applicant aged 75 or over cannot be covered.
Our Sports Travel Insurance policy provides up to £5,600 worth of equipment cover. This add-on not only protects your own equipment, but also any equipment you hire during your trip. It also covers your kayaking equipment in transit to and from your destination.
