What does rock climbing insurance cover?
Rock climbing travel insurance combines essential travel protection with specialist activity cover for the risks involved in climbing, helping protect you from trip departure through to your final descent.
It’s designed for climbers heading abroad for a one-off trip, climbing holiday or multi-discipline adventure. Climbing-specific cover can include protection for climbing competitions, specialist climbing equipment, activity fees and search and rescue.
For typical travel requirements you’ll find cover for emergency medical treatment and repatriation, trip cancellation and travel disruption, delayed and damaged baggage, personal accident, liability and more.
Do you already have travel insurance but are looking for enhanced climbing cover? Our rock-climbing bolt-on can extend your existing policy to cover climbing for a single day, a week-long trip or a longer expedition, even after your trip has started.
Our policies provide three different types of cover: Sports travel insurance, Sports accident, and Activity Top-Up. Please ensure you select the most suitable cover for your activity, when you get a quote and always review your policy documents.
Sports equipment is excluded under our bolt‑on.
Only a summary of the policy’s coverage is presented on this page. Please refer to policy documents for full details of what is and what is not covered, when you get a quote.
How much does rock climbing insurance cost?
Your climbing insurance price will first depend on the plan you choose; Bronze, Silver or Gold. Each provides different benefit limits, including varying levels of protection for areas such as emergency medical expenses and trip cancellation.
Your travel details will also help determine the price, including your age, destination and the length of your trip.
The climbing itself is another important consideration. Your premium can vary depending on the type of climbing you plan to do, the altitude involved and the level of risk associated with your routes. More technical or demanding climbing activities may be priced differently from lower-risk recreational climbing.
You can also add climbing equipment cover where required, which may affect the overall cost.

Why you need rock climbing travel insurance?
Injuries can require urgent treatment
Falls and climbing accidents may require costly medical treatment or repatriation.
Rescue can be complex & costly
Incidents in remote or exposed locations may need specialist search and rescue support.
Travel disruption can derail your climb
Missed departures or cancellation can leave you facing unexpected costs.
Our experts explain why…
“Rock climbing can take you to exposed heights and remote outdoor locations, where falls, changing weather and difficult terrain can quickly turn a carefully planned trip into a costly situation.
Good preparation, suitable equipment and local safety guidance can help reduce the risks, but injuries, delays, cancellations or damage to your climbing gear can still disrupt your plans.
Our rock-climbing travel insurance can help with emergency medical treatment, search and rescue costs, trip cancellation, travel delays, and the loss, theft or damage of essential sports equipment.
With more than 30 years’ experience supporting active travellers, we’re here to help climbers travel with specialist cover in place when the unexpected happens.”
