What does Nepal trek insurance cover?

Our Nepal trekking travel insurance is designed for adventurers planning a one-off Himalayan trip, from classic routes such as Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit to remote circuits, high mountain passes and expeditions reaching up to 7,000m.

It brings together specialist trekking cover and essential travel protection in one comprehensive policy.

Specialist Nepal trekking cover can include search and rescue, trekking equipment, pre-paid activity or expedition fees and protection for the altitude level selected.

Combined with essential travel cover, the policy can also protect you against emergency medical treatment and repatriation, trip cancellation and curtailment, baggage, personal accident and other unexpected travel costs.

As many popular Nepal trekking routes exceed 4,000m, it is important to select a policy that covers the maximum altitude you expect to reach.

Please note for emergency rescue by helicopter in Nepal cover for call-out costs is limited to £5000 (excess £750).

Already have travel insurance but trekking at altitude in Nepal is excluded? Our Travel Bolt-on can extend your existing policy to cover the days you are taking part in a Himalayan trek.

Our policies provide three different types of cover: Sports travel insurance, Sports accident, and Activity Top-Up. Please ensure you select the most suitable cover for your activity, when you get a quote and always review your policy documents.

Sports equipment is excluded under our bolt‑on cover.

How much does trekking in Nepal insurance cost?

Your Nepal trekking insurance premium is shaped by several key factors: age, trip duration, the maximum altitude you plan to reach, and the level of cover you choose for your Himalayan adventure.

It also depends on the type of trekking you plan to do and its risk level, whether your route exceeds 4,000m or 5,000m, the cover limits you choose for medical, cancellation and evacuation, and whether you include additional cover for trekking gear and specialist equipment.

Hear from our experts

“Trekking in Nepal can take you through remote mountain regions, challenging terrain and high-altitude environments, where changing weather, altitude sickness or an unexpected injury can quickly become serious.

Careful preparation is essential. Check your route and maximum altitude, allow time to acclimatise, carry suitable clothing and equipment, follow local guidance and make sure the trek matches your fitness and experience.

Our Nepal trekking insurance can help cover emergency medical expenses, repatriation, search and rescue costs, cancellations, delays and other unexpected expenses if your Himalayan trip does not go to plan.”

FAQs

Yes, our Trekking Travel Insurance can generally be taken out even if you have a medical condition. We can almost always offer cover at no extra cost, but occasionally our underwriters may apply special terms if you subsequently needed to make a claim relating to your condition.

If you plan on using equipment such as ice axes and crampons, then this would be classed as a technical ascent, which we can only cover up to 4000m. We can only cover you if you bring equipment to use in the event of an emergency.

Standard travel insurance policies do not always cover hazardous sports. Our Sports Travel Insurance is specifically designed to cover over 500 high risk activities most importantly hiking at altitude up to 7000m.

Our specialist sports travel policy covers trekking at high-altitude (up to 7000m). As well as:

  • Emergency Medical Expenses & Repatriation
  • Search and Rescue
  • Cancellation & Curtailment
  • Personal Accident cover
  • Personal Liability
  • Delayed, lost or stolen baggage
  • Sports Equipment

In the event you get injured during your trek, or fall ill due to altitude sickness or other ailments, helicopter rescue off the mountainside will be covered. This will fall underneath the Emergency Medical Expenses section of your policy. However, we limit this up to £5000 for a helicopter call-out, and an applicable excess of £750 will be applied.

Our policies will cover anyone up to the age of 74 at the time of purchase. An applicant aged 75 or over cannot be covered.

Our Sports Travel Insurance policy provides up to £5,600 worth of equipment cover. This add-on not only protects your own equipment, but also any equipment you hire during your trip. It also covers your trekking equipment in transit to and from your destination.
