What does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu insurance cover?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu insurance is designed around the way you train and compete, from regular classes and open mats to gradings, tournaments and training overseas.
For BJJ practitioners travelling abroad, cover can support overseas training camps, seminars and international competitions, including emergency medical treatment and repatriation, trip cancellation and curtailment, sports equipment, activity or competition fees, search and rescue, and more.
For regular training closer to home, sports accident cover can apply to club sessions, drilling, rolling, open mats, gradings and amateur competitions, providing personal accident protection if you’re injured while taking part.
Our policies provide three different types of cover: Sports travel insurance, Sports accident, and Activity Top-Up. Please ensure you select the most suitable cover for your activity, when you get a quote and always review your policy documents.
Sports equipment is excluded under our bolt‑on cover.

If you sustain an injury from training tools, whilst doing Brazilian jiu jitsu, this can be covered under medical expenses if you’re participating abroad.
For participation in the UK our sports accident policy can cover permanent disability, broken bones, physiotherapy and more, depending on the level of cover you have purchased.

No, there are no exclusions for open mat training. You are covered for the benefits listed in either a Brazilian jiu jitsu travel policy (abroad) or sports accident policy (in the UK).
Yes, our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Travel Insurance can generally be taken out even if you have a medical condition. We can almost always offer cover at no extra cost, but occasionally our underwriters may apply special terms if you subsequently needed to make a claim relating to your condition.
If you sustain an injury from specific guard positions, whilst doing Brazilian jiu jitsu, this can be covered under medical expenses.
Standard travel insurance policies do not always cover martial arts. Our Sports Travel Insurance is specifically designed to cover over 500 high risk activities such as bungee jumping, skateboarding, ski-acrobatics and many more.
If you need medical treatment abroad, following a mat burn infection, whilst doing Brazilian jiu jitsu, this can be covered under medical expenses.
Our policies will cover anyone up to the age of 74 at the time of purchase. An applicant aged 75 or over cannot be covered.
If you sustain an injury for a heel hook, whilst doing Brazilian jiu jitsu, this can be covered under medical expenses.
Yes – we don’t consider a martial arts competition to be riskier than doing the activity as a training pursuit, so we don’t charge a higher premium for that.
