Sports travel insurance can be confusing but we try and make it as simple as possible giving you cover for everything you need. A grey area can be competitions with many standard travel insurance policies excluding cover. Therefore, it is always wise to read up and make sure you are definitely covered for all your activities.
When heading abroad and away from the safety of the NHS and free health care it is important to ensure you are fully covered by your travel insurance for all your activities. There has been a number of high profile cases recently, such as the one of Commonwealth Games Judo medallist, Stephanie Inglis who was injured whilst in Vietnam. Her medical bills were not paid due to taking out incorrect cover. In this case the insurance Stephanie had taken out meant she could not take trips of over a certain number of days which she had exceeded when she had her accident. A justgiving page has meant that Stephanie was able to fund her treatment through generous donations and she is recovering well back in Scotland.
However, this story does give us cause for concern and we believe many people may not be taking out the correct insurance for their sports and activities.
For example, many travel insurance policies will include cover for sports such as football but there will be limitations on what you will actually be covered for. A kick around on the beach with your friend may be covered however a match or any kind of competitive element will not. This means that if you were to be injured whilst participating your insurance will likely not pay out.
Therefore, when taking out travel insurance, particularly when you are planning to take part in a sport or activity it is important to read exactly what the insurance covers and excludes.
