The idea of an ‘ironman’ came about in Hawaii during the 1970’s, when the idea was proposed to combine the three toughest endurance races into one combined event. The proposed Ironman stemmed from the debate on who was the toughest and fittest athletes – runners, cyclists or swimmers.
The ironman race was filmed a few years later which brought worldwide recognition to the sport. To open the event to a wider range of athletes, the half ironman or ironman 70.3 was formed being made official in 2001, allowing greater participation levels for those still wanting to take on the tough challenge.
