British Cycling is encouraging wannabe amateur riders to embrace the ‘social cycling’ scene with it’s new initiative. HSBC UK Ride Social has been created in association with the sport’s governing body to bring together those looking to take up the sport.
According to recent research carried out by YouGov, 40% of adults in the UK find it hard to make new friends. And with only 36% getting regular exercise according to the latest Sport England figures, the programme looks set to tackle two issues at once.
The website acts as a hub for those looking to find a local ride or cycling group to share a morning, afternoon, or even whole day on two wheels. Creating a sense of community, once you sign up for a ride, cyclists are able to see others who will be joining them and communicate with one another through the website.
The initiative acts as a stepping stone for those either looking to start cycling regularly or those who are already cyclists, that don’t want to make the jump of joining an organised and recognised cycling club.
As well as the ease of joining a ride, engaging in this ‘social cycling’ allows riders to learn from others, share advice and tips as well as providing motivation to improve their fitness and cycling capabilities.
Luke Harper, head of HSBC UK’s partnership with British Cycling said:
“Jumping on a bike and joining an HSBC UK Ride Social Ride could be an easy way of making new friends, while also reaping real health benefits. You don’t have to dress in super-tight lycra, or ride at supersonic speed, this is about getting out and about at your own pace with like-minded people.”
The group aspect of the rides translates into higher productivity according to British Cycling’s research. Their figures suggest that nearly half of all those questioned said they found it easier to exercise in a group.
HSBC UK Ride Social isn’t the only organisation set up to bring cyclists together though. Cycling UK provides a directory of local groups and delivers a number of resources to help cyclists improve their ability.
Judging by Google’s figures, it is apparent that the British population is keen to take up cycling too. An average of 1,600 people a month search for the phrase “cycling clubs near me”, while 320 a month look for “cycle rides near me”.
There are now plenty of options out there for would-be cyclist to link up with their contemporaries. And with that added accessibility comes the somewhat inevitable rise in the number of people cycling. In the past year, SportsCover Direct have seen a 23% increase in the number of people taking out insurance for cycling in the UK.
If you’re inspired to get involved in the ‘social cycling’ movement, visit HSBC UK Ride Social website to find a local ride. Before you do head out though, consider taking out our Sports Accident Insurance to cover you for any serious spills.
