1. Helmet
A well fitted helmet is your most essential piece of equipment. It is designed to save your life, whether from stray debris or a fall and with the huge range on offer, you are guaranteed to find one to suit your needs. The helmet you choose will depend on the fit and the type of climbing. For example, warm-weather climbing requires a lightweight model with plenty of air vents.
2. Climbing boots
Some people may choose to climb in walking boots while others prefer boots designed especially for climbing and mountaineering. Whichever you choose it is important to feel comfortable, confident and secure. Also take the time to break your boots in before your first excursion to avoid problems.
3. Harness
Be sure to find the right harness for you and your climbing needs. The options are extensive from ultra light, stripped down sports harnesses, to traditional harnesses with durable padding able to carry more gear. Check that your harness has been submitted for stringent testing to ensure its quality.
4. Ropes
Climbing involves many different kinds of rope and when buying it, you will need to make several decisions about what you need from it. Your local climbing centre or a decent outdoor shop should be able to advise you.
5. Belay Kit
A belay kit enables a controlled descent with total precision while offering support in case you lose your footing. They are especially useful when climbing with children.
6. Carabiners
Almost all carabiners for recreational climbing are made from lightweight aluminium alloy and are used as connectors. Most common are locking and non-locking carabiners.
7. Gloves
Gloves can eradicate the possibility of rope burn which can cause a climber to involuntarily release the rope.
8. Warm, waterproof clothing
It is important to be prepared for changing weather conditions when climbing outdoors. Rock climbing locations may be in mountainous regions where the weather is known for its unpredictability so be sure to have extra warm layers and a good waterproof.
